Visit Dollar
Dollarbeg Castle lies on the outskirts of Dollar in Clackmannanshire, the smallest county in Scotland. It’s one of the 4 foothill villages of the Ochil Hills. The village has shops, pubs, restaurants and even its own museum. A wonderful place for walking -Castle Campbell is only 3 miles away with its wonderful scenery as you walk through Dollar Glen and see fantastic views of Dollar below. Also not far away is Alloa Tower (8 miles), one of the earliest and largest Scottish Tower Houses (run by National Trust for Scotland).
There are so many things to see and do, here are are just a few of them!
Stirling, only 12 miles away, has its famous Castle and Wallace Monument to visit. If you enjoy castles then why not have a day trip to Blair Castle in Blair Atholl, Scone Castle in Perth (once the crowning palace of Scottish Kings), or Glamis Castle in Angus, the childhood home of the Queen Mother.
For a boat trip with a difference visit the Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre (40 mins) and be transported from the Forth & Clyde canal to the Union canal over a 100 feet higher!
Roman history buffs will be interested in the stretch from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde. Here are the remains of the Antonine Wall, the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire ~ the best preserved length of which is at Bonnybridge.
For motorsport enthusiasts the famous Knockhill Motorsport Centre is only 8 miles away, either for watching races or testing out your driving skills in classic/racing/rally cars.
Loch Lomond is only an hour or so away, with its visitor and sealife centre. There are also shops and cafes and boat trips.
For golfers, visitors are welcome at the local traditional hillside Dollar Golf Club. There are also over 30 golf courses within an hour’s drive including Gleneagles (where there are many other activities such as shooting, falconry, horse riding to name just a few) and St Andrews.
For retail therapy there is of course Glasgow and Edinburgh, but closer to Dollar is Tillicoultry (10 mins), home of Sterling Mills outlet village and Sterling Furniture with its homestore, garden centre and restaurants.
